Action on Pain was founded by Ian Semmons, our Chairman, in 1998 following his own experiences of living with chronic pain. It had a major impact on his normal daily life, family, work and social activities. Deeply distressed at the severe lack of awareness, practical help and support for people affected by chronic pain he was determined to do something about it.
Today Action on Pain takes an active role in providing advice and support to people living with pain and those affected by it's intrusive effects on daily life. Working closely with other organisations both in the UK and Internationally, the team strives to raise the profile of pain with politicians, NHS Managers and health professionals. In addition, Action on Pain has gained recognition amongst various professional health committees and leading medical organisations for it's campaigning and lobbying activities. Recently this has seen the launch of an active campaign by the Chronic Pain Policy Coalition aimed at getting pain recognised as the 5th vital sign by GP's and other Medical Professionals in patient assessments alongside the other key measurements. Raising awareness of the importance of early and effective assessment of pain can only improve the management and treatment of chronic pain in the UK.
Action on Pain is run entirely by volunteers, many living with chronic pain bringing personal experience of the impact it has on daily life. It is not just the physical restrictions but also the emotional impact of coming to terms and adapting to living with chronic pain.
